The Elimination Diet

theeliminationdiet_fruits-850x478.jpg

Do you think you might have a food allergy or sensitivity, but you aren't sure which foods to blame? Are you experiencing skin flare-ups, digestive issues, moodiness, or brain fog after meals? An elimination diet might be just what you need. Elimination diets are "short term eating plans that eliminate certain foods that may be causing allergies and other digestive reactions--then reintroduce the foods one at a time in order to determine which foods are, and are not, well-tolerated." It's estimated that over 15 million adults in the U.S alone suffer from food allergies and sensitivities. An elimination diet can help you pinpoint what is causing yours, and guide you in taking steps to heal your digestive system.

Which foods are removed during an elimination diet?

Eight foods account for almost all food reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, nuts, wheat/gluten, soy, fish, and shellfish. Though elimination diets can vary in terms of exactly what foods are excluded, most will cut out:

  • gluten
  • dairy
  • soy
  • refined/added sugar
  • peanuts
  • corn
  • alcohol
  • eggs
  • all packaged, processed, and fast foods

How long does an elimination diet usually last?

Most diets last about 3-6 weeks. Antibodies--the proteins your immune system makes when it reacts to food--take about three weeks to dissipate. This is the minimum time needed for someone to fully heal from sensitivities, and notice improvements.

What are the benefits of an elimination diet?

There are so many benefits to doing an elimination diet. Here are just a few:

  • uncovers unknown food allergies
  • helps reduce digestive syndromes such as IBS and Leaky Gut
  • relieves skin irritations like eczema and acne
  • can help treat disorders such as ADHD, ADD, Autism, anxiety, and depression
  • calms inflammation, boosts your body's energy, and strengthens your immune system
  • increases awareness of the foods you eat, and which ones work best for your body

Elimination diets are not for losing weight, so don't think of them as quick ways to drop pounds. The goal is to heal your body.

This diet shouldn't last for more than 6 weeks--stay on it just long enough to pinpoint foods that aren't working for you. Continuing to follow such a strict diet for longer than 6 weeks can begin to deprive your body of the nutrients it needs to keep functioning at 100 percent.

Not sure how it's possible to cut so many foods out of your diet for 3-6 weeks, without running out of meals to make? There are tons of good websites that have elimination diet recipes, tips, and advice available to you for free. Or, you can stop by Nature's Finest Nutrition--we're always happy to help!

The Real Story About Soy

soy.jpg

Over the years, soy has developed a bad reputation. Fear of hormone disruption, poor mineral absorption, digestive issues, and other woes has grown so widely that people fear ingesting soy in any form. However, soy continues to be a staple in the diets of some of the healthiest communities in the world. Here, we will attempt to discover the truth. Is soy good or bad?

Firstly, it is important to recognize there are two different kinds of soy: fermented, and unfermented.

UNFERMENTED SOY:tofu

  • Includes tofu, soy milk, and fake meat products
  • Contains phytic acid, which blocks absorption of key vitamins and minerals
  • Provides anti-nutrients, plant compounds that can act like toxins in the body
  • Can promote blood-clotting, due to a substance called hemagglutinin
  • Blocks thyroid function, due to goitrogens
  • Likely GMO – 93% of soy in America is genetically modified

FERMENTED SOY:

soy sauce

  • Includes tempeh, natto, miso soup, tamari, and soy sauce
  • Improves bone healthy by boosting calcium & magnesium aborption
  • Easier to digest
  • Contains probiotics for gut health
  • Boosts immune function
  • Rich in vitamin K2, necessary for circulatory health and for calcium absorption
  • Balances cholesterol levels

Most studies that show detrimental effects of soy are using unfermented, GMO, conventionally-grown soy. These studies are also often done using rats, and humans differ anatomically from rats. More importantly, rats and humans utilize soy in different ways. For instance, soy isoflavones have been found to inhibit the synthesis of thyroid hormones in rodents, but studies have not found the same effect in humans.

As for the claim that soy can alter estrogen levels in the body, this is a misconception. The phytoestrogens found in soy are not the same as estrogen. Only animals or people can make estrogens. Plants cannot. Plants do contain phytoestrogens.

These are so named because they are similar in structure to mammalian estrogens, but they do not affect the body in the same way, i.e. interrupting menstrual cycles, or giving men feminine qualities unless eaten to excess. This takes 12 servings a day!

Regular consumption of organic, fermented soy has been found to:

  • Slash the risk of prostate cancer by HALF
  • Reduce the risk of heart attacks
  • Reduce breast cancer by 40 percent in pre- and post-menopausal women
  • Lower the rate of ovarian cancer
  • Reduce overall rates of chronic diseases
  • Boost brain function

The No. 1 Digestive Blend for Heartburn & Acid Reflux

beets.jpg

Derived from organic, non-GMO beets, lemons, and licorice root, this 100% plant-based formula helps address the root of digestive issues such as heartburn and GERD (acid reflux). These symptoms can stem from a number of issues, including:

  • low OR excess stomach acid
  • esophageal valve failure
  • overeating (sugar, salt, hydrogenated oils, trans fats, etc.)
  • age (stomach acid decreases starting at age 30!)
  • malnutrition
  • stress

The medical solution to acid reflux or heartburn typically involves one of two medications: proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or antacids.

PPIs and antacids have been linked to side effects including (but not limited to):

  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • loss of appetite
  • stomach discomfort
  • calcium loss or deficiency
  • osteoporosis
  • kidney stones
  • swollen wrists or ankles
  • bone pain
  • gout
  • dementia
  • increased risk of heart and kidney diseases
  • weight gain
  • pneumonia

Beta Gest, on the other hand, helps balance the stomach for optimal digestion.

It also:

  • breaks down dairy
  • provides controlled-release hydrochloric acidlandingpage_m
  • improves digestion of protein
  • boosts absorption of calcium, iron, b-12, and phosphorous
  • maximizes digestive potential
  • aids absorption of nutrients
  • soothes gas and bloating
  • restores digestive factors compromised by stress or age
  • especially digests large meal

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIES:

Steve and Jan S. Stomach problems run in my family. I came to see Jim, who gave me Beta-Gest.   Now I have not had stomach problems.

Mark R. I have had stomach problems for years. Two and a half years ago, I started taking Nexium. Now I’m on Beta-Gest and Aloe, and am doing better than ever. My whole family is taking supplements.

Brook's Battle

img_0053.jpg

It's time for another staff spotlight! We have several employees at Nature's Finest Nutrition, and each has a special story of his/her journey toward better nutrition and health. For the next few months, we'll highlight one staff member every few weeks and share with you our personal paths to better health.

This month, in honor of Celiac Awareness Month, we're highlighting our assistant Brook. Read her story below:

I first came to Nature's Finest Nutrition as a customer ten years ago. IMG_0053

I was talking to a friend one day and mentioned that I didn't feel well. She referred me to Jim.

My husband and I and our two kids, a son and a daughter, came together. We'd been trying to get healthier. We were eating better and after our initial visit, started supplementing with products we bought here.

We got off sodas and refined sugar. Donuts. We were still using fructose from corn, which was still technically white sugar. Jim helped us get off that. Then we got off hydrogenated oils, any kind of food dyes, and all artificial flavorings.

Shortly afterward, when we were in the shop one day, Jim asked if I'd be interested in working here.

I was hesitant at first. I homeschooled my kids, and I wasn't sure I could do both. Jim didn't bat an eyelash. He said I could bring the kids and homeschool them here.

I couldn't say no. I started working Wednesday mornings and Saturdays when they needed me.

For a while, things were great. I was learning about herbs and their many uses.

silver

We started fighting all infections with them. We used a lot of Anthroxene and Nature's Sunshine's Silver Shield. My husband used Sinus Support. Though you may have to take a lot at once, the herbal supplements worked better than prescription meds and over-the-counter drugs. We still use them today.

But then I got sick. I had health issues that seemed to come out of nowhere (though now, I realize they were possibly triggered by a bladder infection), and my doctor couldn't find a problem anywhere. He told me I had the flu.

The symptoms went on and on for six months. During that time, I lost 30 pounds and felt terrible. My energy was gone. I was in serious pain.

Together with Jim and Pat, we tried to find the source of my health problems. At first, we thought it could be an issue with my gall bladder, so I changed my diet and took three gall bladder cleanses. I did one cleanse one weekend, and two more cleanses the next. That made three cleanses within eight days.

I changed my diet to suit my gall bladder, too. I ate healthier foods - mostly wheat, wheat broths, toast, and potato soup. The more I ate, the sicker I made myself, all in the fervent belief that I was making myself better.

How wrong I was.

I knew it wasn't the flu, though, that my doctor insisted upon, so we kept working. We thought my health issues might stem from a stomach ulcer, since my grandma had one, so I started drinking fresh cabbage juice for five weeks straight. I heard somewhere that healed ulcers, so that's what we tried.cabbage

My kids helped me juice cabbages. I had to drink two or three glasses a day and eat only more bland foods.

No coffee. I love coffee, but it was a sacrifice I had to make.

The cabbage juice helped a little bit. It provided nutrients my body needed (namely, L-Glutamine, which is one of the best things to help heal Leaky Guy Syndrome), but it didn't ease my pain. That was still there and very, very severe.

Next, I did a liver cleanse and some coffee enemas. Nothing gave me relief.

I was getting sick after eating, and I had excruciating abdominal pain.

We kept coming up blank in the idea department, and after targeting almost every bodily system and organ we could think of, I was close to giving up hope.

One Thanksgiving weekend, Jim and Pat went to visit an uncle for the holidays and left me to run the shop.

I was in so much pain I could barely sit in my chair, let alone stand. By the second to last day of their trip, I didn't think I'd make it.

When they finally got back and walked in the door to see me, they couldn't believe I was sitting upright. They could see how horrible I felt.

That's when they told me about Celiac disease. The uncle they'd been visiting had been finally diagnosed with it after being sick with symptoms similar to mine for over five years.

I'd never heard of it before, but after we researched it, I realized I completely fit the bill. There were symptoms on the list that I'd been suffering with since childhood and had never thought they could be connected.

Some symptoms include:

bread

  • unexplained iron-deficiency anemia
  • fatigue
  • bone or joint pain
  • arthritis
  • bone loss or osteoporosis
  • depression or anxiety
  • tingling numbness in the hands and feet
  • seizures or migraines
  • missed menstrual periods
  • infertility or recurrent miscarriage
  • canker sores inside the mouth
  • an itchy skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis

Come to find out, Celiac can lie dormant in the body and is usually triggered during puberty.

Why mine was delayed, I'll never know, but the more I read, the more I was convinced: I had Celiac disease.

So I changed my diet yet again to eliminate all gluten and, for the first time in forever, my health started to improve. The pain finally started to ebb.

It was a miracle!

Jim recommended some supplemecabbagents to help heal my gut (where Celiac disease originates) and to aid my digestion.

I used Nature's Sunshine's Intestinal Soothe & Build, Carlson's L-Glutamine, and Enzymedica's Gluten Ease and Digest Spectrum. They each helped tremendously.

My energy is back and the pain stays away.

Unless I miss taking my supplements!

With supplements and a careful diet, I'm able to more than function - I can live!

Now that my kids are older, they're starting to show symptoms of Celiac, too. Fortunately, thanks to my experiences - horrible as they were - we're prepared. They're both transitioning to a healthier, gluten-free diet on top of their already processed food and sugar free diet. They're supplementing with the Celiac program now, too.

This time around, we're prepared. We've got this.

I plan to continue learning to improve my knowledge even more in the future. I believe in the power of herbs and proper nutrition. Without them, I wouldn't be leading the life I live today.

God is good!

16 Reasons You Should Eat Sprouts...And Lots of Them.

sprouts2.jpeg

If you, like many people, are trying to make the switch from the standard American diet of sugar, hydrogenated oils, GMOs and packaged, processed foods to real, raw, whole foods organically-grown and packed to the brim with nutrients, then you may want to check out sprouts. Used in Asia for thousands of years as a cure for disease and still a dietary staple in most Asian cultures, sprouts h ave a long history of health. In fact, aptain James Cook used them to combat scurvy amongst his crew on the many two or three year trips he spent traversing the globe.

They've only been used in the western world since World War II, when they were used as a sturdy source of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Able to be planted and grown anywhere and at any time, without the use of soil, sprouts were used commonly throughout the war.

Sprouts have a wide number of nutritional advantages, some of which include:

  • high amounts of Vitamins C & A
  • the entire B-complex
  • increased chlorophyll content
  • higher protein than un-sprouted seeds/nuts/legumes
  • improved calcium, iron, and zinc absorption
  • higher levels of amino acids
  • enriched vitamin E and beta-carotene content
  • reduced gluten proteins
  • high amounts of fiber
  • fewer food allergens
  • more antioxidants

Health benefits of sprouts include:

  • stimulating digestive enzymes in the body
  • converting starch to natural sugar, more easily assimilated and easy on the blood sugar
  • improving digestion and bioavailability
  • breaking down anti-nutrients (compounds that prevent nutrients from being digested, causing several vitamin/mineral deficiencies)
  • supporting beneficial intestinal flora

Sprouts are highly versatile. They pack a nutritious punch by themselves, but can also be

Eat more sprouts by:sprouts1

  • adding them to salads
  • using them in place of greens for salads
  • adding them to sandwiches (in place of lettuce or just for their own merit)
  • putting them in soups
  • mixing them in smoothies or juices
  • blending them in hummus
  • grinding them and using them as flour in baking
  • including them in stir fry dishes
  • and more!

Be creative. Sprouts can be used in a number of ways. You're only limited by your imagination!

Growing sprouts at home is relatively simple and extraordinarily inexpensive.

While it's possible to grow them in a Mason or Ball jar, it involves much more work than growing sprouts in a sprouting tray. In jars, sprouts have to be rinsed multiple times daily to prevent bacterial or mold growth, and trays produce a much larger quantity in half the trouble and without taking precious sink space.

Before you can sprout seeds, however, they need to be soaked. Soak times vary, but the method remains the same. Simply soak seeds/grains/beans/nuts in a bowl for the time allotted on this chart. If the soak time is longer than twelve hours, change out the water and do so again every twelve hours until ready for sprouting.

To sprout:

  1. Rinse and strain seeds, nuts, beans, or grains.
  2. Add a dash of water - one or two tablespoons or so - to keep the sprouts slightly damp. There's no need to submerge them completely.
  3. Leave them out for the proper sprouting time based on the type of sprouts used.
  4. When fully-grown, rinse the sprouts and store in an air-tight container for up to a week, rinsing and switching them to a new container every day to eliminate contamination.
  5. Eat and enjoy!

At Nature's Finest Nutrition, we carry sprouting trays for a mere $24.95. Call to order or come in to get yours and start sprouting, today!

Nature's Remedy for Joint Pain, Leaky Gut Syndrome and Smooth Skin - Beef Gelatin!

pyramidsWhen most people hear the word "gelatin", they think Jell-O, or gelatin candies like Gummy Bears and Gummy Worms, or they think of gelatin capsules. While those are all uses of gelatin, most people don't know that there are many other, healthier uses of gelatin. Its history began in Ancient Egypt, where it was found preserved in an excavated Pharaoh's tomb, still congealed in a glue-like state.

History's first written record of gelatin was in 1682 by a Frenchman of the name Denis Papin, who discovered its tasteless, odorless, and colorless qualities after a series of experiments on the boiling of bones.

In the 1950s, it was used popularly in aspic dishes, which consisted of any combination of fruits, vegetables, meats, or other foods submerged and eaten in jellied broth.

Manufactured for the first time in 1974, gelatin was used to make jellies, marmalades, and other fruit spreads.

Shortly afterward, the popular Jell-O brand emerged - bleached, artificially sweetened and distorted into something entirely unlike its natural counterpart.

Made using the hides of cows and pigs, and processed beyond recognition, commercial gelatin has questionable nutritional value, at best.

Made at home using the cartilage and bones of chicken or beef, the health benefits and nutritional value is exponentially higher.

Surprisingly, for such a colorless, tasteless, odorless substance, gelatin contains eighteen amino acids - sadly, not all of which are essential (i.e. not made by the body and therefore required in our diets).

Those that aren't considered essential, however, have been subject to many studies showing that, if not essential, these amino acids should be considered "conditionally essential."

Two of these amino acids are glycine and proline.

Glycine can be made by the body, but often, due to poor diet (processed/fast foods, hormone-infused meat and dairy, GMOs, etc...) or other health conditions (including injury, arthritis/joint pain, pregnancy, infancy, etc.) cannot be made in large enough quantities satisfy the body's needs.

The same goes with proline. The body produces it, but often, due to Vitamin C deficiencies and other factors, the body either fails to produce enough, or the body cannot absorb and utilize it.

Gelatin helps to provide these nutrients on a large scale and with a huge amount of benefits.

Some of these include:

  • Supporting healthy growth in infants
  • Improving digestion of dairy/dairy products
  • Reversing undernourishment or malnutrition, as gelatin can be tolerated by the stomach when almost nothing else can
  • Preventing protein breakdown in muscles
  • Regulating hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach
  • Calming the gastrointestinal tract
  • Lessening rheumatoid arthritis & degenerative joint issues
  • Easing leaky gut syndrome
  • Smoothing and regulating food digestion
  • Soothing allergies & food sensitivities
  • Improving energy
  • Boosting overall health
  • Supporting glandular function
  • Stimulating liver function & detoxification
  • Tightening loose skin
  • Promoting hair, skin & nail growth
  • Supplying a large quantity of natural collagen
  • Improving quality of sleep

Gelatin has an indefinite shelf-life if uncooked and kept in an air-tight container.

The best is Great Lakes Gelatin, the highest quality and least-processed gelatin in the industry, both MSG and gluten free. Their kosher Beef Gelatin (which we carry) will mix easily in room-temperature liquids.

Gelatin can be mixed in drinks, smoothies, used to make marshmallows, gummies and, obviously, be made into natural Jell-O. Add it to a drink for an instant protein boost. It can also be used to thicken broths or soups, yogurts, kefir, or sauces.

In addition, when added to cow's milk, is of a similar composition to human breast milk. Check out this recipe for an all-natural, organic raw milk baby formula.

It can also be used to make homemade hair gel, or used as a shampoo thickener, facial cleanse, or even an egg substitute!

NOTE: gelatin should never be microwaved. As with many foods, this can alter the chemical construction of the amino acids in gelatin and make them harmful to the liver, kidneys, and other organs.

For more information on ways to cook, store, and mix gelatin in homemade dishes, this is a good place to start.

Sugar: Harmless Sweetener or Deadly Drug?

sugar.jpeg

In this day and age, sugar has a bad rep. Most people are aware that they should watch how much they eat, but not everyone is aware of the reasons. Most know it adds to their waistline little by little, year by year, but that's only one side effect. There are many more, lesser-known reasons we should seriously avoid sugar and make every effort to eliminate it completely from our diets.

SUGAR:

1) Damages your skin. It can harm the already existing collagen and elastin proteins that keep your skin supple and strong, producing wrinkles and sagging. As if that wasn't bad enough, sugar can alter the production of collagen and inhibit antioxidant enzymes. This, in turn, leaves your skin weak, wrinkly, and far more susceptible to sunburn.

2) Prevents Vitamin C Absorption. Similar in structure, glucose (sugar) and Vitamin C battle to get into white blood cells. If there is too much sugar in the blood stream, Vitamin C cannot get in, and the immune system cannot perform its jobs. This leaves the immune system hindered and depressed.

3) Drains the body of nutrients. Since sugar itself has no nutrients, vitamins or minerals, to be metabolized by the body, the body has to use up its own stores, which in turn halts fatty acid and cholesterol absorption. High cholesterol levels, serious vitamin and mineral deficiencies, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes are a few things that can result over time if no dietary change is made.

4) Causes Osteoporosis. As with Vitamin C, Sugar inhibits calcium absorption. This leads to weaker, brittle bones more prone to breakage. After prolonged exposure, sugar can lead to low bone density, rotten teeth, and osteoporosis.

5) Increases your risk of autoimmune and degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. By inhibiting natural functions and processes, it allows all sorts of havoc to run rampant in the body.

6) Weakens the liver. Regular consumption of sugar leads to a build-up in the liver. This causes the liver to convert it into fat, which leads to clogging. This slows down and can completely stop liver function, causing Fatty Liver Disease and a number of other health issues, including the shutdown of your pancreas. An organ with over three-hundred functions, a stressed liver will cause no shortage of problems.

7) Raises triglyceride levels and bad cholesterol. The higher the sugar consumption, the higher the triglyceride and bad cholesterol levels. In addition, good cholesterol levels drop drastically and the risk of heart disease rises.

8) Triggers the brain the same way morphine does. It meets all the criteria of a drug, and it's in nearly every processed, packaged, and fast food on the market. Sugar addictions are very real and very widespread. Once consumed, sugar sparks a desire for more, and the more eaten, the greater the craving. Bingeing is becoming more and more common, as is obesity.

Sugar withdrawal is also a serious issue. Symptoms include:

  • muscle aches
  • shaking
  • anxiety/depression
  • headaches
  • exhaustion
  • moodiness/irritability
  • lightheaded-ness
  • and other flu-like symptoms.

9) Accelerates aging. By damaging cells, sugar causes them - and you - to age faster, increasing the rate of cell death. Couple this with a fatty liver, and the risk of cancer and degenerative diseases skyrockets.

10) Feeds yeast, fungus, and bacteria. This one is pretty self-explanatory. With all the other side effects of sugar, this one shouldn't be surprising. Yeast, fungus and bacteria slurp sugar up. They thrive off of it, and they'll live off anyone who eats it regularly. Eliminating sugar can drastically eliminate these infections.

11) Damages your heart. Not only does sugar raise your risk of heart disease as mentioned above, recent studies have also found that sugar actually alters the heart's pumping mechanisms. It does so by altering proteins, the building blocks for your heart and your body.

12) Feeds Cancer. Cancer uses sugar as its prime energy and food source. Sugar consumption has been linked to breast, prostate, rectal, pancreatic, lung, gallbladder, and stomach cancers, and the list is growing.

Additional side effects include:

  • hormonal imbalances (in both men and women)

Safe, natural substitutes for sugar include Stevia, honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar. Rather than side effects, they each have their own health benefits and can be used in cooking, baking, frying, and more.

Why use something that will only poison your body when you can use something that will help it?

Sugar has no place in your pantry, much less your body. Think twice before you eat it, or better yet, don't eat it at all.

Julia's Journey

picmonkey-collage.jpg

It's time for our first staff spotlight! We have several employees at Nature's Finest Nutrition, and each has a special story of his/her journey toward better nutrition and health. For the next few months, we'll highlight one staff member every few weeks and share with you our personal paths to better health.

This month, we're highlighting our assistant Julia. Read her story below:

For as long as I can remember, I've struggled with my weight, asthma, allergies, fatigue, back pain, and a number of other health issues. From the time I hit puberty on, I hated my body and how I felt. I hated how I looked in pictures, in mirrors, and I hated waking up so tired it was all I could do to make it to two in the afternoon before crashing for a nap.

Even those didn't help. I'd sleep for an hour, two, maybe three depending on the day's schedule and my levels of exhaustion, and still wake up groggy, disoriented, and with a headache that lasted until bed.

I hated exercise because it made me feel insecure. I didn't want to join a gym because I couldn't exercise for long without losing my breath, and I felt so defeated every time I tried. I liked walking, but never had enough energy to actually get out and go.before

I was seventeen years old, nearly fifty pounds overweight, and extremely introverted as a result.

That's when I came to Nature's Finest.

My mom had been shopping here since I was a kid, but I'd never come with her. We'd been by several times, but the first time I went in was for my job interview.

Needless to say, I was hired, and that's when my journey to health began.

I didn't jump right in, as perhaps most would have. I'm a skeptic at heart. I'm cautious by nature and tend to study things, learn all I can about them, take into account several angles and options, and then make a decision.

It took me a minimum of six months before I was willing to consider trying anything, and most of my motivation came from the stories of customers, most of whom were seeing tremendous results in everything from colds and flu to cancer.

When I finally did try something, it was an herbal combination for my allergies.

From an early age (about eight or ten or so), after suffering through two years of bronchitis, I was diagnosed with allergy-induced asthma and put on three medications: Advair, Claritin, and Nasonex. I was prescribed three puffs of Advair daily, two sprays of Nasonex in each nostril daily, and one Claritin every night before bed. I also had an emergency inhaler and a packet of Prednisone on me at all times in case of an attack. The inhaler, Albuterol, I used as needed, usually two or three times yearly, depending on my physical habits, weather, and other issues.

Slowly, over the years, I started weaning myself off each medication without telling my doctor. By the time I started working at Nature's Finest, I was taking one puff of Advair every other day or as needed, and the same with the others. If I felt like I was dragging, I'd medicate. Otherwise, I left them well alone.

blogWhen I started taking Nature's Sunshine's ALJ, I felt every bit as healthy as I did when I was taking my medication full-time, if not better. When I went to see my doctor, I passed my examination with flying colors. As far as he was concerned, I was still taking my medications as prescribed and doing better than ever. My lung function was up, my allergies, down.

No more medication for me!

After that, I grew a bit more curious. Working here, I felt like a fraud for only taking one product and knowing practically nothing about the many others on our shelves.

Slowly, I began to watch, pay attention to the bestselling products and do a lot of research, both for the business and on my own. I began taking our best and most popular multivitamin and mineral: GNLD's Formula IV Plus.

Although the results weren't immediate, I experienced huge changes. blog

All my life I had hormonal and glandular issues and didn't know it. My adrenal glands were overtaxed and weak. As a result, I had heavy, painful cycles every month with a number of symptoms, including bloating, crippling leg cramps, and nausea, to name a few.

I thought I was one of those unfortunate people doomed with heavy cycles. I didn't know there was a way to fix or change it, but birth control wasn't an option. I wasn't going to take another pill after finally eliminating several others. It wasn't worth the risk and possible side effects.

So for years I suffered, until Formula IV Plus.

It wasn't overnight, but slowly, I noticed my pain lessening month by month, and my cycle growing easier and more regular. My other symptoms were lessening, too. After my glandular issues were pointed out to me, I added NeoLife's Multi-Min into the mix and again, my symptoms eased significantly.

Eventually, I started drinking NeoLife's GR2 Control shakes, as I decided it was also time to do something about my weight. Protein is key to healing the endocrine system, and with their GR2 technology, I could keep my blood sugar levels balanced and possibly - hopefully - lose weight, too.

True enough, my menstrual cycles completely normalized. For over a year now I've had regular, dare I say, easy cycles. Gone are the days I spent lying in bed or cuddled on the couch in too much pain to move or sleep.

My life is a lot easier, and that's nowhere near the end of it.

Weight loss has, by far, been my hardest struggle.

I started with metabolism boosters a bit before I tried the protein shakes. I tried avocado oil, coconut oil, and green coffee bean extract. I'd lose five pounds in a week on each, and then gain it back slowly over the next month.

It was this way with all of them, except Raspberry Ketone.

It's safe to say I experienced minor success with this one. I made absolutely no changes to my diet, I wasn't exercising, and I lost about ten pounds on the product. When it came to Thanksgiving, I doubled my dosage (from one pill before each meal to two) and was happily surprised to find I didn't gain any weight the entire week, despite consuming several pies, cakes, and sweets more than I should.

However, I plateaued again and felt my hope draining.

It was around this time that our health coach, Cheryl Howe, joined the team. Working along side her, seeing her help other people with their weight loss goals and hearing her talk about real, raw foods inspired me to try to move in that direction.

One day, I cut out all sodas. Cold turkey.

My house was swimming with them, but I avoided them like the plague. It took an enormous amount of willpower, yet somehow, I've only slipped up once since eliminating them, and even then only as a treat. Over a year later, I've remained soda-free ever since.staff

That's not to say you can't enjoy a soda every now and then. Once in a blue moon, it's okay. Daily, the damages add up quickly, not only to your waistline, but to your health as a whole.

After cutting out soda, I started drinking two protein shakes a day as a meal replacement and upping my water intake. I drink half my body weight daily in water, and slightly more on the days I exercise.

Which brings me to the next step. I started walking three days a week on the treadmill. I started simply. I walked for half an hour, increasing the speed every few minutes until I reached my peak, and then warming back down. As my peak grew higher, my walk time increased until I was up to forty minutes.

I watched movies, TV shows, or listened to music as I walked, and ate breakfast afterward. This way, I burned stored fat rather than calories from food, and followed up my workout with a low-glycemic breakfast. Typically, full-fat greek yogurt with half a cup of fruit (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, or grapes), honey, and a sprinkling of granola.

This served its purpose. I was losing weight slowly but steadily, and I was starting to feel less groggy, more clear-minded, and my mid-afternoon crash was lessening. I had more energy and more body-confidence, but I knew there was more I could change if I really wanted to be healthy.

I went from a size 16+ (I wore sixteens, but had to squeeze into them and probably stretched them out in the process) to a size 14 just in time for a friend's wedding. About a fifteen pound weight loss. I couldn't have been prouder.

I thought about stopping, but with a healthy BMI as my goal, I kept working.

Thanks again to Cheryl, I was introduced to interval or burst exercising. In layman's terms, it's an emidasy way to exercise in less time and get more done. It involves short bursts of high-intensity activity followed by ninety-second rest periods. This is done to increase the heart rate and include strength training, and that's not even the best part. There are a plethora of health benefits that come with it, too, including balanced blood sugar levels, increased and longer fat burn, improved heart function, muscle growth, increased metabolism, and more!

Upon starting interval training, I lost more weight and felt even better. I had higher levels of sustained energy, and I was sleeping better, too.

I continued on the protein shakes and changed my diet yet again. I dropped ALL sugar, processed foods, and ate out only when necessary. I was eating one whole-food meal a day in conjunction with the shakes, which I started accompanying with a granola bar or a small serving of yogurt.

As I dropped more sizes, from a 14 to a 12, then down to a 10, I've eliminated the shakes in favor of healthy eating. I eat only foods with real, unprocessed ingredients (no sugar, no chemicals - especially canola oil or any other hydrogenated oils, no GMOs, etc...), organic when I can afford it, and I add chia seeds to nearly everything.

Considered powerhouses of nutrition, chia seeds, when soaked in water or other liquids, will become gelatinous. They can then be mixed in smoothies, drinks, puddings, yogurts, added to salad dressings, used in baking, desserts, and more! The uses are innumerable. I find more and more ways to use them everyday, and I love them all. Chia seeds are high in fiber, protein, low in calories, and rich in vitamins and minerals. They're a great way to stay full all day long.

In addition, I eat only sprouted grain breads. They're easier to digest, high in vitamins and minerals, and full of whole grains. They have a nuttier, richer flavor in my opinion, too. The best is the Ezekiel 4:9 bread, found in the freezer section in more and more grocery stores. Publix, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and Bi-Lo, to name a few.

I previously cut out all bread, but now can enjoy sprouted bread with health benefits, versus the fattening, insubstantial white bread varieties. If that's not a win-win, I don't know what is.

Dairy-wise, I don't eat much (apart from greek yogurt) unless I can get unpasteurized raw milk. In that case, I drink as much milk as I can get. Eggs are the same way. I eat organic, free-range eggs when I can. The differences are astounding. Raw milk is richer, smoother, and completely devoid of the after-taste I so despise in the store-bought varieties. The raw eggs are also more delicious, more golden in color, and worth every penny.

Now, a year and a half later, after too many diet and exercise changes, too many diet pill attempts, I'm down to a size 8/10 depending on the brand and style of clothing, and I'm less than ten pounds away from my goal. I'm a healthy BMI for the first time in my life, and I have energy levels unlike anything I've ever encountered.

Gone is the fatigue. Gone is the bloating after every meal. Gone is my back pain. I feel clean and fresh, much like the foods I'm eating.

Now, I crave healthier foods. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, leafygreens. I crave the foods that two years ago I would have turned up my nose at. I eat a lot of protein, still drink a lot of water, and feel better than ever before.

If I eat sugar these days, my body reacts adversely. I feel bloated and sluggish for a day or two afterward, and the same goes for processed or fast foods. Now that my body gets a steady supply of real food, it wants nothing else.

I plan to keep it that way.

Two years and 45+ pounds lighter, I'm finally happy in my skin. It doesn't get much better than that.

Winter, Probiotics, and Acidophilus Plus

winter.jpeg

With winter come brisk weather, weakened immune systems and sickness. Since eighty percent of your immune health lies in the gut, it only makes sense to ensure you give your gut the best nutrition you can, especially during these cold, chilly months. Probiotics take the top spot on a list of supplements for gut health. There are lots of them out there, lining the shelves of pharmacies and supplement stores, but only one will give you the full nutritional support you need.

GNLD’ S ACIDOPHILUS PLUS™

GNLD’s supplement of beneficial bacteria, Acidophilus Plus, combines potencacidophilusy with technology to guarantee that  live  microorganisms  survive  the  stomach  acid and reach the intestine to deliver viable  organisms to support optimal digestive and colon health.

  • Each capsule is filled  with five billion  live  microorganisms—as many as in 10 servings of yogurt—all in one daily serving!
  • You receive  beneficial  bacteria isolated  from  cultured  dairy foods,  so  you  get  the  benefits without  the  extra  calories  from these foods.
  • Acidophilus Plus  provides an  exclusive  blend  of  five types  of  clinically  provenlactic  acid-producing  bacteria: lactobacillus  acidophilus, lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus  casei,  Bifidobacterium bifidum, and streptococcus thermophilus.
  • The exclusive  Gel-Gard  enteric protection system guarantees deliveryby protecting against  harsh  stomach  acid and  ensuring  that  maximum numbers  of  live  bacteria  are delivered in the intestine.

GEL-GARD PROTECTION:

Exclusive Gel-Gard Enteric Protection System Guarantees Delivery of Beneficial Culturesstuff1

This technology involves wrapping the bacteria in a special gel-forming polysacharide, which is insoluble in acidic conditions of the stomach. This is then enclosed in a gelatin capsule. When the capsule reaches the  stomach,  it  dissolves and the contents of the capsule form an insoluble matrix called Gel-Gard.

HOW PROBIOTICS WORK FOR YOU:

Metabolism:

  • synthesize b-vitamins
  • lower levels of toxic/mutagenic compounds
  • reduce risk of colon cancer
  • promote long-term colon health

Digestion:

  • produce enzymes to digest lactose
  • improve lactose intolerance

Immunity:

  • strengthen innate immunity
  • reduce food allergy symptoms in children
  • keep “bad” bacteria in check
  • prevent travelers’ diarrhea
  • control irritable bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: CAN I TAKE ACIDOPHILUSPLUS™ IF I AM LACTOSE INTOLERANT?

A: Yes.  Probiotics in Acidophilus Plus, though derived from cultured dairy foods, are purified so that the amount of  lactose  remaining  is  insignificant  to  create any undesirable effects in lactose intolerant individuals.

In fact, lactobacilli are capable of producing lactase, an enzyme that helps break down lactose and helps the digestion of these foods.

Q: DO INEED TO TAKE ACIDOPHILUS PLUS IF I CONSUME DAIRY PRODUCTS?

A: Some, but not all, dairy products contain live, active cultures and many are sold suggesting that they are beneficial for our health. Most of these are fresh products requiring refrigeration, and there is considerable doubt as to how many of the live bacteria actually survive in the stomach acid. Taking Acidophilus Plus guarantees that a significant number of live beneficial bacteria are delivered to the intestine.

Q: THE PRODUCT LABEL SAYS ACIDOPHILUS PLUS CONTAINS STREPTOCOCCUS. ISN’T THAT THE HARMFUL BACTERIA RESPONSIBLE FOR CAUSING STREP THROAT?

A: No. Some good bacteria have names that sound like bad bacteria. Streptococcus refers only on the shape of the bacterium, and has nothing to do with its ability to promote health or cause disease. (strept means “twisted” and coccus means “round.”) Streptococcus thermophilus—the species included in Acidophilus Plus—has been safely used for centuries to produce cultured dairy products.  The bacterial species associated with causing strep throat is streptococcus pyogenes.

Q: DOES ACIDOPHILUS PLUS NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED PRIOR TO OPENING THE BOTTLE?

A: Although not necessary, keeping Acidophilus Plus refrigerated prior to opening the bottle may further increase the shelf life of the product. It must be refrigerated afteropening the bottle to ensurethe potency of the beneficial cultures.

Q: CAN CHILDREN USE ACIDOPHILUS PLUS?

A: Yes. Anyone who can safely swallow the Acidophilus Plus capsule can take the product and enjoy its benefits.

Organic Eggs vs. Commercial

eggs.jpeg

As in the milk industry, organic and free-range eggs are often bad-mouthed as dangerous or less beneficial. In truth, organic eggs are a much safer and healthier alternative. For one, the living conditions of commercial chickens are inexcusable. These units, called CAFO’s (confined animal feeding operations), have chickens living in their own filth, often with eleven or so birds crammed into a single cage.

Here are more reasons why organic eggs outweigh their commercial counterparts:

ORGANIC EGGS:

  • 2/3 more vitamin A
  • 7 times more Beta Carotene
  • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
  • 1/3 less cholesterol than their commercial counterparts
  • Rich in vitamins A, D, B12, B2, niacin, and folate
  • Contain two carotenoids, which help prevent and cure cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as help fight cancer
  • Contain choline, which is necessary for cell structure, function, and signaling
  • Generally come from chickens with better living conditions on small farms; free-range

COMMERCIAL EGGS:

  • 3 times less vitamin E than organic eggs
  • Contain traces of arsenic from their genetically-modified (GMO) feed.
  • 7.7 times greater chance of contamination than free-range eggs
  • Come from genetically-engineered chickens
  • 23 percent of commercial farms with caged hens tested positive for salmonella
  • The chickens are pumped full of synthetic hormones, which can transfer to the eggs
  • Can stem from inhumane living conditions, with dead and sick birds left in cages beside the chickens still producing eggs
  • Commercially-raised chickens are often full of antibiotics. Their eggs, too.

The Art of Oil Pulling

oil.jpeg

WHAT IS OIL PULLING AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Oil pulling is an Indian folk remedy originating thousands of years ago. It involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth and through your teeth for ten to twenty minutes. This targets plaque by absorbing bacteria and dissolving it before it can become stuck to your teeth.

HOW TO OIL PULL (WITH COCONUT OIL)

  1. Put about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth.
  2. Swish the oil around your mouth for ten to twenty minutes, pushing and pulling it through your teeth to clean every nook and cranny.
  3. Spit the oil into a trash can. If you spit into your sink, the oil will harden and clog your pipes.

Note: coconut oil can be solid at room temperature, so you may have to wait for it to melt in your mouth before you can begin swishing.coconut oil

For best results, do this on an empty stomach.

Don’t swish too forcefully. If the muscles in your mouth become sore, lighten up for a few minutes. You may also try experimenting with less oil if the soreness continues.

It’s important to spit out the oil. You don’t want to swallow it because it is full of bacteria and nasty things.

BENEFITS OF OIL PULLING:

  • Boosts energy
  • Increases metabolism
  • Decreases joint pain
  • Decreases PMS symptoms
  • Clearer skin
  • Decreases allergies
  • Decreases headache symptoms
  • Relieves bleeding gums
  • Whitens teeth
  • Strengthens teeth, gums, and jaw
  • Prevents bad breath
  • Moisturizes lips, mouth, and throat
  • Relieves migraine headaches
  • Alleviates hormone imbalances
  • Reduces redness and swelling in bones and joints
  • May help with gastro-enteritis
  • Aids in the reduction of eczema
  • Helps support normal kidney function
  • Reduces congestion
  • Improves vision
  • Promotes normal sleep patterns
  • Relieves hangover after alcohol consumption
  • Aids in reducing discomfort
  • Helps detoxify the body

Himalayan Salt vs. Table Salt: Which is Better?

salt.jpg

While many people are aware that regular table salt is bad for you, they assume all other salts must be, too. That’s simply not true. Pink Himalayan salt has a plethora of health benefits and a great flavor, too. Below are some benefits of the pink Himalayan salt above some health concerns that arise from table salt consumption.

HIMALAYAN SALT:

      • slows the aging process
      • aids digestion & absorption of nutrients
      • improves respiratory & sinus health
      • regulates water levels within the body
      • strengthens bones
      • eases arthritis, gout, & rheumatism
      • balances pH levels, particularly in the brain
      • promotes healthy sleep patterns
      • reduces muscle soreness
      • creates healthy libido
      • maintains healthy blood sugar & blood pressure levels
      • detoxifies the body
      • is rich in minerals, containing 84 in total

WHEREAS TABLE SALT:

      • increases risk of developing stones in the kidneys and gallbladder
      • cannot be digested by the body
      • turns into sodium chloride, which the body doesn't recognize and see as an invader
      • leads to weight gain
      • causes cellulite
      • is linked to arthritis, gout, and rheumatism
      • raises the risk of developing osteoporosis
      • increases the risk of heart disease or stroke
      • pulls water from the bloodstream, and hence causes thirst
      • contains no nutrients
      • can accumulate in the blood and weaken arteries
      • builds up in the body where it can cause nerve damage.

When it comes to deciding which salt to use, the answer is pretty simple. Why use one that merely harms your body, when you can use one that will benefit it instead?

At Nature's Finest Nutrition, we carry a high quality Pink Himalayan Salt at a very reasonable price.

Canola Oil: The Health Hazard in Your Pantry

canola2.jpg

Originally known as rapeseed oil, a derivative of the rapeseed plant, canola was renamed in 1978 to disassociate the oil with the word "rape" and its darker affiliations. A literal combination of the words "Canada" and "oil", canola oil surfaced in Canada and quickly found a niche in the United States as a cheaper alternative to olive oil. Tasteless, easy to make and genetically modify, canola oil flew off the shelves, into our homes, and crept with even greater stealth into virtually every packaged and fast food on the market. Even foods claiming to contain olive oil often possess canola oil in addition. Similarly, in cases where labels read "contains either: canola, olive, or safflower/sunflower oil", you can bet your dollar it contains canola. It's the least expensive option out there, and it's a big moneymaker for the US. Altered so that it no longer contains high levels of erucic acid (a toxic substance connected to various heart issues), Canola oil is touted as "the healthiest salad and cooking oil available to consumers."canola It is promoted as being:

  • low in saturated fats (which recent studies are showing we need more of rather than less, if we wish to preserve our brain and nervous health)
  • high in monounsaturated fatty acids
  • rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids

What they don't tell you is that the FDA prohibited canola oil consumption by infants, banning it from all infant formula. They recently retracted this ban in 2013, now allowing up to 31% of the oil's fats in the formula. The FDA considers canola oil generally safe and a good source of ALA, an important acid for growth and development. They couldn't be farther from the truth. Canola oil has been linked to health issues such as:

  • blood clotting
  • stilted growth
  • tremors
  • lack of coordination
  • memory issues
  • slurred speech
  • numbness
  • tingling in hands and feet
  • altered/accelerated heartbeats
  • heart lesions
  • severe vitamin E deficiencies
  • inhibited enzyme function
  • slowed metabolism
  • blood platelet abnormalities
  • multiple sclerosis
  • free radical damage (often linked to cancer)
  • respiratory illness
  • blindness
  • anemia
  • irritability in infants
  • low birth weights
  • fatty deposits on the thyroid, kidneys, heart, and adrenal glands
  • depressed immune function
  • and more.

Even worse, canola oil is practically everywhere, and unless your diet consists of all-organic foods, there's a large chance you have some sitting in your closet or pantry, hidden away in the ingredient lists in packaged and processed foods. It's hard to avoid, but not impossible. Ways to avoid canola include: switching to healthier cooking oils. If you're thinking of corn, vegetable, safflower, sunflower, or soy oils, think again. These all have their own lists of health issues and side effects, and most are made from GMOs. A few safe, high-quality options include:

  • olive oil
  • coconut oil
  • pastured butter
  • sesame oil
  • flax seed oil
  • avocado oil
  • red palm oil

You want to make sure your oils are GMO-free, and either cold-pressed or extra-virgin. This basically ensures they are unprocessed and in the most natural form available. If you can afford to pay the little extra for organic, that ensures an even higher quality and supply.   Questions?  Contact us by phone at (423) 899-8422 or by email (naturesfinestnutrition (at) gmail.com). Milk: Raw vs. Pasteurized

milk3.jpg

When some people think of raw milk, they cringe. Isn’t it unhealthy? Impure? That’s what the health industry wants you to think. In reality, raw milk has a variety of health benefits that well outweigh those of the store-bought milk sitting in your fridge. Here's How:

RAW MILK:milk

  • was used historically to cure several chronic diseases.
  • contains all 8 essential amino acids.
  • is full of antibodies, which help fight allergies, asthma, and viral and bacterial infections.
  • CAN be digested by those with lactose allergies or intolerance.
  • contains CLA, which boosts the metabolism, reduces resistance to insulin, and lowers food allergy reactions.
  • is rich with fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins and minerals.
  • is composed of 60 types of enzymes.
  • has 3 mg of good cholesterol for brain, liver, nerve, and blood health.
  • contains saturated fats, which trigger a feeling of fullness and satisfy hunger.

PASTEURIZED MILK

  • contains 26.6% less calcium than raw milk.
  • has 25% less vitamin B-1.
  • has 200% less iron.
  • contains 300% less vitamin C.
  • cannot be consumed by people with dairy allergies.
  • destroys essential amino acids in processing.
  • kills certain enzymes naturally found milk when it goes through the pasteurization process.
  • kills certain good bacteria that make milk last longer, and therefore sours quicker.

ALONG WITH ITS VARIETY OF HEALTH BENEFITS, raw milk can also be used in cooking to make other dishes, including:

  • kefir
  • yogurt
  • buttermilk
  • whey
  • cream cheese
  • smoothies
  • protein shakes
  • custard
  • and more!

Versatile, tasty, and packed with probiotics, it's safe to say raw milk is the better of the two. It can be harder to access, however,  so be sure to check your state guidelines on the purchase of raw milk.

Microwave Ovens: What You Didn't Know

microwave.jpg

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to throw food in the microwave without a second thought. After all, they’ve been in our homes for over forty years! But are they safe? Recent studies suggest otherwise.

What do microwaves do to our food?

  • Alter and deform the chemical makeup
  • Allow carcinogens from plastic containers/covers to seep into our food
  • Create known cancer-causing agents in meats, milk, and cereal grains
  • Decrease the nutritional value of food, killing up to 90% of its nutrients, vitamins, and minerals
  • Create cancer-causing free-radicals in vegetables

What do microwaves to do us?

  • Cause more radiation than cell phone base stations
  • Standing a foot away from a microwave can expose you to 400 milliGauss. And exposure to only 4 milliGauss has been linked to leukemia.
  • Affect heart rate and variability
  • Can cause blood sugar levelsto spike
  • Lead to digestive issues
  • Cause a higher level of cancerous cells in the blood
  • Raise chances of intestinal and stomach cancer
  • Create malfunctions in the lymphatic system, and in turn suppress the immune system

People with radiation poisoning can experience these symptoms:

  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Appetite loss
  • Headaches
  • Depression or irritability
  • Vision or eye problems
  • Swollen lymph nodes or a weakened immune system
  • Insomnia or night sweats

Perhaps scariest of all, is the fact that there are no longer any existing control groups to test the amount of radiation spilling from microwaves, as all human beings are regularly exposed to radiation.

So, what next? If microwaves are dangerous, as this information suggests, what do we do?

The answer is simple. Eliminate the use of your microwave oven as much as possible. Heat food on the stove or in crock pots as often as your schedule will allow, and try to implement more raw foods in your diet. You'll feel much healthier if you do!
